On my way to Moab Easter Fullsize Truck Safari I decided to stop by Boyce Equipment and see what 'ol Mark Boyce had layin' around the shop. I found tons of cool trucks and parts, but what really caught my eye were these: Brand new AxleTech 4000 series axles! Now before you go and get yer panties in a bunch over these axles being too big to use let me explain.
Yes, they are too big for the typical 4x4 enthusiast. But, if you want to run 44-inch or bigger tires with a ton of power, they start looking pretty lucrative.
They come with planetary hubs so the center differential is smaller, lighter, and has more ground clearance than a traditional axle. Overall gear ratios range from 4.35:1 to 13.74:1. The axles Boyce has have 6.86:1 gears, making them a pretty good match for some 49s or even 54s. They also have wheel-mounted disc brakes and selectable lockers, all already installed and ready-to-run.
They ain't cheap, however Boyce told me a price (for a pair) that was less expensive than a pair of some of the custom aftermarket Dana 60 axles out there. Sure Rockwells are cheaper, but when you start tossing aftermarket parts at the 2 1/2-ton axles it gets expensive quick, making these a good buy for some people. I think he had about 15-20 axles.
