I never thought I would ever find a lumber rack for my '73 Jeep J-2000. It's not exactly a common truck nowadays. Anyway, I reluctantly ordered up a Smittybilt universal lumber rack (PN 18604) thinking it would never fit. Since it was built for modern-day fullsize trucks (much larger than the Jeep) I figured I could modify it to fit. Surprisingly, it nearly bolted right up! I only had to modify two holes to allow more adjustment. But once I had the rack installed it just didn't look right. It sat about 6 inches too tall.
So, I busted out the Porter Cable reciprocating saw and lopped 6 inches off of each one of the four legs, re-drilled the four mounting holes in the tubing, bolted it back to the bed, and I was done. I think it looks a lot better with the rack at the right height. It should be fun going wheeling now, people will have to laugh when they see how capable my work truck is.
