When I was a kid I always wanted a dually as my daily driver. I had no idea what fuel efficiency, 1-ton capacity, or harsh ride when empty meant. I just thought it looked cool and I wanted it.
Many years later I now know better than to think a dually would make a good commuter car. Even though it's only for a short time, I have found myself doing just that with the pictured '12 Ram 3500 Crewcab Laramie Longhorn. I recently flew into Detroit for the auto show and the truck was available. It's basically the most high-end Ram truck you could possibly option out. It features more leather than an entire heard of cattle and the interior emits the intoxicating aroma of a brand new catcher's mitt. As a commuter car it oozes excess, and I love it! Of course it's a little out of place in Detroit. People give you strange looks as you roll into the valet of the hotel. Driving downtown in a dually is the equivalent of walking into an old musty Detroit pool hall in Wrangler Jeans, Lucchese cowboy boots, and a Stetson hat. Regardless of all that it's been a fun truck to drive. You just have to plan a little ahead when finding a parking spot, especially when the lot only has spaces for compact cars.
