What Happened!!?

A buddy of mine was having some trouble with his AMC 20 rear axle. It's in a fairly stock four-cylinder CJ-7. He pulled the stock two-piece axleshafts and yanked the carrier only to find this.

Can you see the problem? And if so, how did it happen?

2. I think I've figured it out.... But if it were a bent housing or bent shaft the whole carrier would be hogged out. Remember that the carrier spins too.

3. ahhh, yes... I wasn't thinking too clear last night. I have no real guesses. Maybe the axle shaft - no, that doesn't make sense. Damaged splines and metal fatigue? Earthquake damage?
