Granville King was one of Four Wheeler's most memorable and beloved contributors. His monthly column, "From the Backcountry," which detailed the often-humorous pitfalls of a life lived far away from pavement and civilization (in his case, a few clicks south of San Felipe, Baja), appeared in the magazine from 1984 until his death in 1990 at age 70. We were rummaging through some back issues the other day and came across this essay of his on the virtues---and sometimes, the necessity---of "Driving Broke & Dumb" in the February '90 issue. As it happened, this turned out to be Granville's last column for Four Wheeler---but 20+ years later, his writing, and his memory, still bring a smile to our faces.
