As I was leaving Cobo Hall the other day, I came across the sad, half demolished corpse of old Tiger Stadium, home to the Detroit Tigers from 1896-1999. I thought I would grab a couple photos as a moment in time and as a tribute to this former park fo glory. As I pulled off the road, I took in a few moments, thinking about what it must have been like to sit in the old stadium on a warm spring afternoon and soak in America's Past Time with a refreshing cup of Detroit's finest brew. For those who don't know this is the historic field where Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run and
Lou Gehrig ended his 2,130 consecutive game streak.
My visions were quickly shaken when my feet started getting cold in the 8-inches of snow I was standing in, and a brisk 10 degree wind started to blow. Suddenly my thoughts drifted to returning to the warmth of the car and as I got back in, I took one last look at the landmark and regretted never taking in a game on one of my former visits to D-town.
The neighborhood has obviously been affected by th closure of the stadium, as the many closed storfronts and empty buildgs can attest. I did find a banner on the fence of a nearby hardware store with a website to visit on the preservation of the stadium: www.savetigerstadum.org, an interesting read if you have time.
