Okay, today’s Wheela in Tha Hood is the Olds Bravada, a classic exercise in ‘90s brand-muddling from the wacky wags at GM. Based off the GMT 330 chassis also employed by the Chevy S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy, and built at the General’s Moraine, Ohio plant, the Bravada was intended to offer consumers an upscale version of the S-series SUV, but instead it probably confused potential buyers who walked into Olds showrooms. Was it rebadged Blazer? (It was.) Was it a real four-wheel drive? (Yes, but it had no low-range gear.) Could you get a locker for it from the factory? (Don’t ask.) We actually tested the Bravada back in our 1991 Four Wheeler of the Year test, and staff members with long memories around here recall it being arguably the lamest 4x4 we’ve ever tested. We did like the rig’s componentry---4.3L 200hp V-6, 4-speed automatic and full-time Borg-Warner 44-72 case with a 35/65 torque split---but found it haplessly out of its league on virtually any trail. This example of the first-gen Bravada went away in 1994, and while the vehicle was revived on another platform two years later, it never really found its proper niche and suffered from poor sales until the death of Oldsmobile in 2004. We snapped this puppy at the local car wash because . . . well, because we hardly ever see any of these things in good running order around here anymore.
