Wheelers In Tha Hood

A little lift, a little bling, a little bugshield . . .

In yet another episode of our interminable series showcasing what Dudes Are Driving in our 'hood, we spied this ultra-clean Blue Oval 3/4-ton parked on a side street near our LA offices, and it’s a sweet example of how just a few simple mods can improve a truck’s wheelability and looks without sacrificing overall function. The ol’ eighth-gen Blue Oval here most likely came from the factory with the very-stout 460 V-8, though the 6.9L Navistar diesel was an option. A four-speed automatic transmission (or Mazda HD five-speed manual) and Warner 13-56 transfer case were standard, as were the eight-lug Dana 60 front (with manual hubs; HD Fords went to auto-lockers the next model year) and 10 ¼-inch full-floater rear axles. This model here utilizes a basic spring-over-axle arrangement to clear 35x12.50 Cepek Fun-Country IIs on 16x7-inch rims. The bed is tastefully appointed with diamond-plate rail trim, and there’s a Transfer Flow aux fuel tank back there for extended range, too, as well as a handy (Royal?) toolbox. With a little lift, a little bling, and a little bug shield, this is one F-truck that can wheel, or tow, or boulevard-cruise just about anywhere.
