This thing belongs in a museum . . .
There are wheelers, and then there are wheelers, and this classic ’66 Land Cruiser wagon is sure to garner plenty of attention, no matter where it goes. The four-door version of Toyota’s venerable FJ-40 Cruiser, the FJ-45V four-door ran on a longer 104-inch wheelbase but otherwise shared most of its underpinnings with the bobtail: 135hp, 237ci straight-six, three speed stick trans, 2.31-geared transfer case and Toyota 8-inch axles located by leaf springs and spinning 4.11:1 cogs. Production numbers are spotty for this rig, but best estimates are that only some 20,000 of them were ever made during its 1960-67 production run, after which is was replaced by the better-known (but still not too-common) FJ-55 wagon.
This unit, spied near our palatial Wilshire offices, is running a genuine old-skool Con-Ferr roof rack and brush guard, as well as a pair of Cibie lights and a winch of unknown manufacture. The old steel rims have been replaced by modern-day Toyota alloys, and a set of Michelin LT radials comprise current rolling stock. Otherwise, everything else on this rig---inside and out---has been pretty much left in factory-stock condition. Considering the pristine condition of its sheetmetal, exterior trim and interior, we’d have to wager that this beauty hasn’t been wheeled too hard---if it all---in recent years, but heck, when you’ve got something this nice, why mess it up? The way we see it, this puppy belongs in a museum.
