My wife was digging around in some old photos the other day and found some images of my 2nd 4x4, this '77 International Scout II. This image, taken on a wheeling trip on private land in Wisconsin, is circa 1992.
The truck sported a 345ci V-8, 727 trans, D20 transfer case, D44's and leaf springs. It was an ultra-simple machine that I drove everywhere. I bought it in 1987 and it looked like the photo below.
Pretty sad huh? It had this nauseating factory decal thing going on and it was rusted beyond belief. Can you believe this truck was only 11 years old when I bought it? Can you imagine seeing a 1997 model year rig this badly rusted?
The first thing I did was remove the ugly decals and then I hung new fiberglass fenders on the truck. We drove it all over the place that way including on a wheeling trip to South Dakota and Colorado. We slept many nights in the back of the truck during that trip. When the rocker panels rusted out and allowed the doors to sag we restored the truck with a less-rusty body tub from a '79 Scout. We actually painted and striped the truck as you can see in the first image. I drove the Scout for a number of years until the rocker panels rusted out again and the doors sagged. The truck still exists though it is now partially disassembled on a farm in southern Wisconsin.
