But It's A Dry Heat

Reflecting On Past Testing And The Heat Thereof

Reading VonSeggern's blog about the Power Stroke's burrito-cooking exhaust pipe temperature got me thinking about heat.  It brought back memories of Pickup Truck of the Year '04 and the blast furnace-like temperatures we tested in that year.

It was September and we were near Borrego Springs, California. I remember driving along a desert trail and glancing up at the outside temp gauge on one of the trucks and seeing it register 130 degrees.  Naturally I took a photo of it (click on the above image to enlarge it).  I remember running around in an ungodly hot giant sand bowl for about an hour shooting action photos of the trucks blasting through the sand.  There are no words to describe the incredible heat.  When we returned to our motel for the night it was impossible to get a cold, or even cool, shower because the sun superheated the ground during the day, which in turn superheated the water in the underground pipes.  Good times.  This mega heat came as a shock to me, 'cause it's a pretty big deal if we hit 90 degrees on a summer day here in the Midwest.  Of course out in the desert it's a dry heat.
