Yup, I went against my math and at the advice of those wiser than me I filled up before getting on the freeway. It also didn't hurt that I found a Chevron for only 2cents more than I was going to pay at the Shell by my house.
So, how much gas did I put in are you asking? The truck ended up taking a whopping 27.2 gallons making TheRebel the winner. Now why am I glad I filled up? Doing the math I got 15mpg on that tank, which if that average would have kept up would have been enough to make it the 25 miles that I needed, however I decided that in the interest of science I would fill up when I got home too to see if I would have actually made it. To my surprise I put in 2.3 more gallons. That's right; I would have coasted in with only .5 gallons left in my tank. And if I would have had any less than the full 30, I would have run out, or if (and this is very likely) the fuel pickup isn't scraping the bottom of the tank, I would have run out.
I guess I need to start listening to those wiser than I and stop pushing it with the fuel gauge before I actually do wind up stranded on the side of the freeway.
(the pump shut me off at $100 so I had to go a second round, thus the two photos as proof to how much it took)
