I'm sitting in the office, three hours away from my commute home, and my trucks "Low Fuel" light is on... I think I just might run out of gas today...

Or maybe not. When I left for the office this morning my "Low Fuel" light came on about five miles into my 25 mile commute (trust me, that's short compared the other staffers here) and instead of filling up I decided to press on to the office.

So here is how I figure it, I have 407 miles on this tank thus far. I need 25 more miles out of this tank to make it home. And I have a tank that holds 30 gallons. The way the math works is like this, at an average of 13mpg (this is in an FX4 F150 with the 5.4L BTW) I can get 390 miles from a tank, 14mpg will get me 420 miles, 15mpg will get me 450, and 16mpg will get me 480 miles.

Now looking at that I can see that I'm getting better than 13 for sure, or I would be out already. If I'm getting 14 I'm screwed, can't make it. If I'm getting 15 I'll make it fine and 16 I'm golden. Normally I wouldn't worry, but looking back in my log book (I log everything on this truck, just like we do testers) I see that since my last oil change I've been averaging nearly 16mpg per tank, which is great. But what has me questioning this is the fact that there are a few rouge 14.5 tanks in there, and the last tank I filled up was 13.5. Scary huh.

So what would you do? Pay the $5+ per gallon it costs out here in West L.A. and not take the chance? Or pray real hard and run it home on fumes?
