Mahindra has got another trick up its sleeves---namely, a diesel-hybrid quad-cab/SUT version of the midsize pickup truck---currently named Scorpio---that is slated to make its debut Stateside sometime next year. This newer---and judging by the looks of it, far more ‘wheelable---model here will be unveiled at this week’s SAE World Congress in Detroit.
Joining the 2.2L diesel I-4 engine in the Scorpio SUT is a hybrid-electric powertrain system, driven by a 40hp electric motor, developed in a joint venture with FEV, that works in serial fashion with the diesel engine (start/stop, “electric launch,” regenerative braking) a’la the well-known Toyota hybrid drive system. We definitely like the stance of this new SUT, though how much of the package shown in the photo (tires, winch, off-road lights) will ever make it to production models is questionable given Mahindra’s stated pricing goals. But heck, we’ll be happy to give the Scorp’ a testdrive whenever we can get ahold of one---and either way, the upcoming midsize truck wars just got a heckuva lot more interesting.
