Yep, we can now confirm the long-standing rumors: International will resume manufacturing light-duty 4x4 rigs for 2010 . . .   

This is some of the best news we've heard in ages: after a hiatus of nearly 30 years, the venerable IH Scout is returning to the market for 2010. According to senior company sources who spoke to us on condition of anonymity, International Truck & Engine will roll out its new light-duty truck-based SUV starting in late 2009. The new rig, slated to be built at IH's Springfield, Ohio assembly plant, will initially be sold through current IH (tractor) dealers, though we've been told that plans are in the way for a stand-alone nationwide Scout dealer network of some 60-odd stores by 2012 or sooner. 

We're still learning more about this rig, but from what we've discovered thus far, the next-generation Scout will be a two-door, body-on-frame design with a base engine that will likely be a variant of IH's MaxxForce 4.5L V-6 or 6.4L V-8 diesel, though our sources confirm that a diesel-electric hybrid version will also be offered, as will a gas engine yet to be sourced. Either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission will be available with either full- or part-time four-wheel drive systems to be supplied by New Venture Gear. Suspension is said to be independent/coilover up front, and a Dana 60-spec solid axle with leaf springs in the rear. Also under discussion, according to our source, is a factory-option "Rallye" off-road package featuring tow hooks, skidplates and rockrails, HD cooling components, driver-selectable locking diffs, 32-inch all-terrain tires, and retro exterior graphics. 

If all this sounds too good to be true, well, guess what? It is . . . What day is it again?
