Chevy Suburban - Project SuperBurb

Some of you may remember a former Tech Editor Craig Perronne. Craig left Four Wheeler in 2004 to work for another magazine. Unfortunatly Craig took his 1971 Chevy Suburban project with him.

Fortunatly Feature Editor Robin Stover was able to purchase the Super Burb from Craig last week.

We're not sure exactly what direction to take with this project, but whatever we do, it's going to be cool.

The building blocks are already in place:

Here are the specs:

Vehicle-1971 3-door Suburban 4x4

Engine- HT 383 Stroker built by GM Performance Parts

Transmission-Advance Adapters sourced NV4500

Transfer Case- Rebuilt NP 205

Rear Axle- ORU Prepped 14-Bolt with Detroit No Spin diff

Front Axle- Dana 44 with OX Locker

Gearing- 4.88:1

Wheels/Tires- 16-inch Procomps/ 35-inch Xterrains

Other goodies: Aluminum radiator, new drive shafts, new silver paint job, Rhyno lined quarter panels, MSD distributor, and a 6-inch Superlift Suspension system.

first off, so cool to have superburb back! this was my guide line for my build up! :)

what i would like to see is a functional but offroadfriendly interior, so buckets and a rollcage, but nicely put in place so it won´t disturb the look of the interior.

also i´d like to see you put some hid lights on it (bumper an roof/ driving an pencil beams) and cover the light output on these! i would especially be interested in the light patern with maybe 2 pencils on the roof, 2 driving on the roof and 2 driving on the bumper! :)
(maybe an hid healight upgrade) ;)

2. WELCOME BACK SUPERBURB!!!

My 72 Sub is reaping all the benefits of the SuperBurb's trials and tribulations.

I'd like to see two things:
1) Since SuperBurb won't be in 4 wheel drive all the time, I'd like to see how a Gear Vendor's Under/Overdrive (http://www.gearvendors.com/4x4.html) would hold up.
2) When SuperBurb gets in over his head in 4 wheel drive, I'd like to see an application of a PTO driven Foers Winch concept custom built (http://www.4wdonline.com/Foers/Winch.html) by Rawson-Koenig, Inc (http://www.rki-us.com/winches_home.shtml).

In any event, I'm looking forward to Superburb's next article!

3. Still need help blowing that project build up budget?

How about a few of the boring basics:
-Fire extinguisher
-Shovels, axes, saws, ropes, straps, jacks
-basic tool kit, basic wiring kit
-First-Aid kit
-Rear recovery points
-UnderArmor -- skid plates, gas tank cover, rock sliders, etc.
-Cargo tie downs
-Air compressor with auxiliary tank
-HAM radio setup
-CB radio
-GPS
-Undercoating (for that matter, new paint)
-Auxiliary fuel tank

A little preparedness goes a long way to getting back home.

4. I'd like to see a state of the art anti-theft/recovery system. No sense dumping all that money into the Rig only to have someone hot wire it.

5. The Super-Burb caught my Eye, I dont have a suburban, but i do have a 71 3/4 ton camper special, -2 wheel drive- with a 350 in it. what do i need and how do i go about converting this to a 4 wheel drive? or is it worth it?

A 20 minute phone call to ORU (http://www.offroadunlimited.com/ProductCart/PC/home.asp)should put you on track. Bottom line: It would be cheaper to buy a 4x4 than convert but if you really like your camper special then it will be worth it to you.

7. so when will super burb be back in the magazine? can´t wait to see how it looks painted! i would like to see some of it within the next two issues of the magazin! :)

8. it's good to see the love for the ol' 3 doors. I have a '71 2wd with the 350. and was wondering what route to take as far as a new carb? right now I've got a quadrojet, but was wondering if it would be better to go with a Holley. What did you guys go with?

I have a 76 suberban 3/4 ton trailering special that i just lifted 4 inches and im thinking about swaping in a manual transmission and doing some motor upgrades but i use superburb "insperation". just thought i should let you guys know and your magazine rocks!!

11. With all the aftermarket support for diesels, I'm going to drop the 383 and re-power my '72 3-door with a Duramax and Allison combination.
